Frequently asked questions

What does an ID number validator actually check?

It checks that a number has the right length and characters and, where the issuer publishes one, that its check digit or check letter is consistent with the other digits. That catches typos and swapped digits.

Does a valid result mean the number was issued?

No. A checksum cannot tell you whether a number was ever assigned or who holds it. Only the issuing agency can confirm that, and most do not offer a public lookup.

Why do some validators only check the format?

Some identifiers, such as the UK National Insurance number or the Canadian Business Number, carry no public check digit. For those the tool can only confirm the allowed shape and prefixes.

Is it safe to enter a real ID number?

Every validator here runs as JavaScript in your browser. Nothing you type is sent, stored or logged. Still, only enter numbers you are entitled to use.

Format and checksum only

These tools check format and checksum in your browser. They do not query any register, and a passing result is not proof that a number was issued or belongs to anyone.
