How the LEI check digits work
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character alphanumeric code defined by ISO 17442 and administered by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF). Its structure:
- Characters 1–4: the prefix of the Local Operating Unit (LOU) that issued it.
- Characters 5–18: the entity-specific part assigned by that LOU.
- Characters 19–20: two check digits, computed with ISO 7064 MOD 97-10.
To verify: convert every letter to a number (A=10 … Z=35), read the whole 20-character string as one large integer, and take it mod 97. The LEI is valid if, and only if, the remainder is exactly 1 — the same rule an IBAN uses. This tool computes it as a running mod-97, which is exactly equivalent for any length.
Verification
Before shipping, the algorithm was checked against GLEIF's own published example LEI, 506700GE1G29325QX363, which reduces to remainder 1, while altered check digits do not.

What a passing checksum does and doesn’t tell you
A valid MOD 97-10 remainder only proves the LEI's characters are internally consistent — it does not confirm the LEI was ever issued, is active, or belongs to a given company. Confirm registration in GLEIF's public search. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
