Canadian · Validation

ROR ID validator & checksum checker.

Paste a ror.org URL or a bare 9-character ROR ID. It is normalized, then the length, leading zero, Crockford base32 body and two-digit checksum are each checked and any failed part is named. Format and checksum only: it cannot confirm the ID was ever issued. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is transmitted.

How the ROR ID checksum works

A ROR ID (Research Organization Registry) is written https://ror.org/ followed by 9 characters: a leading 0, six lowercase Crockford base32 characters (digits and letters, excluding i, l, o and u), and two decimal checksum digits. ROR's identifier documentation states the last two digits follow ISO/IEC 7064:2003.

ROR's reference implementation (ror-api, generaterorid.py) decodes the six-character body as a base32 number n and computes 98 − ((n × 100) mod 97), zero-padded to two digits, which is the ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 check also used by IBAN. For example, 02mhbdp94 has body 2mhbdp and checksum 94. The format pattern also appears in the ror-schema repository.

What a passing checksum does and doesn’t tell you

This tool checks format and checksum only. A pass means the ID is well formed and internally consistent; it does not confirm the ID was ever issued or which organization it names. Look it up at ror.org for that. Everything runs in your browser: nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
