Finnish HETU checker.
Check a Finnish henkilötunnus against the check character defined in Finnish law, including the century signs added in 2023, and decode the date of birth and sex.
How it works: join the date (DDMMYY) and the three-digit individual number into a nine-digit number, divide by 31, and look up the remainder in the table 0–9, A–F, H, J–N, P, R–Y. That character must match the last character. An odd individual number means male, even means female.

How a Finnish henkilötunnus is built
The HETU has the form DDMMYY C ZZZ Q: birth date, a century sign, a three-digit individual number and a check character. It is 11 characters long.

How is the Finnish HETU check character calculated?
Divide the nine-digit number made from DDMMYY and the three-digit individual number by 31 and map the remainder with the table in Decree 128/2010 s.2: 0–9, then A–F, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y.
What do the century signs Y, X, W, V, U and B–F mean?
Under the 2022 amendment, people born in the 1900s may carry - or Y, X, W, V, U, and people born from 2000 carry A, B, C, D, E or F. A plus sign marks the 1800s.
How can I tell sex from a HETU?
The three-digit individual number is odd for men and even for women.
Does a passing HETU mean the person exists?
No. This tool never contacts the Finnish population register.
