Colombia NIT check digit.

Calculate the dígito de verificación (DV) of a Colombian NIT, or check that a full NIT's last digit matches the DIAN algorithm.

What a pass means: the NIT's last digit is the DV the DIAN algorithm produces for the digits before it. This checks the arithmetic only. It cannot confirm the NIT is registered in the RUT, was issued, or belongs to anyone.

How the NIT dígito de verificación works

A Colombian NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria), also called RUT, is the tax number administered by the DIAN. It is written with a final check digit after a dash, for example 800.197.268-4. The algorithm is defined in the DIAN's Orden Administrativa 4 de 1989.

Working from the right of the body (the digits before the DV), multiply each digit by the weights 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67, 71 in order and add the products. Take the sum modulo 11. If the result is 0 or 1 the DV is that value; otherwise the DV is 11 minus the result.

Worked example: for body 213123432 the sum mod 11 is 10, so the DV is 11 − 10 = 1, giving 213.123.432-1 (the python-stdnum reference example). 2131234325 fails because its last digit is 5.

Sources that agree: the python-stdnum co/nit.py reference implementation and the Spanish Wikipedia article on the NIT, which cites the DIAN.

Checksum only — not proof the NIT is registered

A pass only means the last digit is arithmetically correct. This tool does not query the DIAN or the RUT, so it cannot tell you whether the NIT was issued, is active, or belongs to a particular person or company. Confirm a NIT with the RUT document or the DIAN's own services. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
