International · Validation

Israeli ID number validator.

Check an Israeli ID number (מספר זהות) against the check digit its last digit carries. Up to 9 digits, padded with leading zeros. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works: the number is padded with zeros to 9 digits, digits are weighted 1, 2, 1, 2... from the left, the digit-sums of the products are added, and the total must end in 0. If it doesn't, the number has a typo.

How the Israeli ID check digit works

An Israeli identity number (Mispar Zehut) is up to 9 digits; the last digit is a check digit. Shorter numbers are written with zeros on the left to reach nine, and the number must be greater than zero. The check digit follows the Luhn scheme.

The validation procedure
StepWhat happens
1Pad the number with zeros on the left to 9 digits
2Multiply the digits alternately by 1 and 2, starting with 1 on the leftmost digit
3Where a product is 10 or more, add its two digits together
4Add everything up; the number is valid if the total is a multiple of 10

Worked example: 039337423 gives 0, 6, 9, 6, 3, 5, 4, 4, 3 after the weighting and digit-sums, which total 40, a multiple of 10, so it passes.

Checksum check only, not a population registry lookup

A passing result means the digits are internally consistent. It does not confirm the number was issued to anyone. The rule that short numbers are zero-padded is sourced from python-stdnum and the Hebrew Wikipedia example only; no official Israeli specification was found for it.

Sources

Reference implementation: python-stdnum, stdnum/il/idnr.py (zero-padding to 9, value above zero, Luhn check). Agreeing independent sources: Wikipedia: Israeli identity card and Hebrew Wikipedia: מספר זהות (ישראל).

Format and checksum only

This tool checks the format and check digit entirely in your browser. It does not query any Israeli registry, and a checksum-valid result is not proof the number was ever issued. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
