SEVIS ID format

USCIS SAVE's July 17, 2025 tutorial says the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System identifier consists of the letter N followed by up to 11 numbers. The ID is printed on Form I-20 for F and M students and Form DS-2019 for J exchange visitors. A typical shape is N0012345678.

This checker accepts the number with or without the printed N and removes spaces or hyphens. It does not accept letters inside the numeric portion, and it does not confuse a SEVIS ID with a school code, visa number, USCIS receipt number, or A-Number.

Official source: USCIS SAVE Tutorial — revised July 17, 2025. ICE's SEVIS school user manual also identifies N and leading zeros as parts users may omit when searching.

Shape only

A correctly formatted ID is not proof of an active SEVIS record. Confirm the number against your current Form I-20 or DS-2019, or ask your designated school official or responsible officer.
