Italian codice fiscale validator.

Check the 16-character Italian tax code of a person and read back the birth month, day and sex it encodes. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works: the first 15 characters are converted to numbers with one table for odd positions and another for even positions, added up, and divided by 26. The remainder (0 to 25) becomes the 16th character, A to Z.

How the codice fiscale is built

The personal codice fiscale is 16 characters: 3 letters from the surname, 3 from the given name, 2 digits of birth year, a letter for the birth month, 2 digits for the birth day (plus 40 for women), a 4-character place code (a letter and three digits) and a final check letter. Only the check letter, the month letter and the day are verified here; the surname and name letters need the person's actual name, which this tool never asks for.

The check letter procedure (art. 7)
StepWhat happens
1Take the first 15 characters. Characters in positions 1, 3, 5 … 15 use the odd table; positions 2, 4, 6 … 14 use the even table
2Even table: digits 0-9 are worth 0-9 and letters A-Z are worth 0-25
3Odd table: 0/A=1, 1/B=0, 2/C=5, 3/D=7, 4/E=9, 5/F=13, 6/G=15, 7/H=17, 8/I=19, 9/J=21, K=2, L=4, M=18, N=20, O=11, P=3, Q=6, R=8, S=12, T=14, U=16, V=10, W=22, X=25, Y=24, Z=23
4Add all 15 values, divide by 26, and turn the remainder into a letter (0=A … 25=Z)

Month letters are A January, B February, C March, D April, E May, H June, L July, M August, P September, R October, S November, T December. The widely published example RSSMRA80A01H501U gives a sum of 98, remainder 20, letter U.

Omocodia

When two people would get the same code, the decree lets the digits in positions 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 be replaced by the letters L M N P Q R S T U V (0 to 9). The check letter is then computed on the substituted characters. This tool accepts and decodes those variants.

What this does not do

The two-digit year does not say which century, so no age is shown. The place code is displayed as written; it is not translated to a municipality name because we did not verify a full official table. A code starting with Z is a foreign state. A passing result means the code is internally consistent, not that it was issued to anyone.

Checksum only — not an Agenzia delle Entrate lookup

This tool checks the check letter entirely in your browser. A checksum-valid result is not proof the code was ever issued. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
