EIC code (Energy Identification Code) validator.
Check the format and check character of a 16-character EIC used to identify parties, areas and objects in European electricity and gas markets. Format and checksum only.
How it works: the first 15 characters are turned into numbers (0-9 stay 0-9, A-Z become 10-35, the minus sign is 36) and multiplied by weights 16 down to 2. Add them up, then take 36 minus ((sum − 1) mod 37). That value, written with the same table, must equal the 16th character.

How an EIC is built
An Energy Identification Code has 16 characters: a 2-character issuing office code (the ENTSO-E central office or a local issuing office), 1 letter for the object type, 12 characters chosen by the issuing office, and 1 check character. Permitted characters are digits, capital letters and the minus sign; the check character is never a minus sign.
Object types
- X party · Y area · Z measurement point · W resource object
- T tie-line · V location · A substation or topological node
Worked example
The guide’s own example is 11XRWENET12345-2: the first 15 characters map to 1, 1, 33, 27, 32, 14, 23, 14, 29, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 36, the weighted sum is 2107, and 36 − ((2107 − 1) mod 37) = 2. The guide also notes that a code whose calculation gives 36 must be changed, which is why a minus sign can never be the check character.
Format and checksum only — not a registry lookup
This page checks format and checksum only. It cannot confirm that a code was ever issued or is still active; only the ENTSO-E central registry or the relevant local issuing office can do that. Per the guide, the algorithm is published for checking allocated codes, so this tool checks codes and does not generate them.

Privacy and scope
This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged, and it checks format and checksum only, with no query to any ENTSO-E system.
