FIGI validator & check digit calculator.

Check the format and check digit of a 12-character Financial Instrument Global Identifier, or enter just the 11-character body to have the check digit computed. This checks format and checksum only: it cannot confirm a FIGI was issued or what it identifies. Everything runs in your browser: nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.

Inputs

12 characters checks the existing check digit. 11 characters (prefix + G + 8 characters, no check digit) computes it instead.

Result

Enter a FIGI and press Validate.

How the FIGI check digit works

A FIGI is 12 characters: a 2-letter consonant prefix, the letter G, eight characters that are consonants or digits (never vowels), and 1 numeric check digit. The prefix cannot be BS, BM, GG, GB, GH, KY or VG. Those combinations are excluded so a FIGI is unlikely to look like an ISIN. The Object Management Group (OMG) FIGI specification, section 6.1, defines the structure and the check digit.

Letters map to numbers (B = 11, C = 12 ... Z = 35; digits keep their value). Over the first 11 characters, every second value (the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th) is doubled, every resulting number is split into its decimal digits, and all the digits are summed. The check digit is the amount that brings that sum up to the next multiple of 10. The spec's worked example: BBG000BLNQ1 gives a digit sum of 34, so the check digit is 6 and the full FIGI is BBG000BLNQ16. A second published example is NRG92C84SB39.

Note on the prefix list: the OMG specification forbids seven prefixes including GH and KY, while python-stdnum's figi.py rejects only five (BS, BM, GG, GB, VG). This tool follows the OMG specification. The check-digit algorithm is identical in both.

What a passing checksum does and doesn’t tell you

This tool checks format and checksum only. A valid check digit proves the characters are internally consistent. It cannot confirm the FIGI was ever issued, that it is still active, or which instrument it belongs to. To look up a FIGI, use the OpenFIGI service directly. This tool makes no lookup: it runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
