arXiv ID validator.

Check that an arXiv identifier is well-formed — old or new scheme, real month, and the right number of digits for its year.

The rules: from April 2007 an ID is YYMM.NNNN (4 digits, through 1412) or YYMM.NNNNN (5 digits, from 1501), optionally followed by a version like v2. Before that it was archive/YYMMNNN, such as hep-th/9901001. The month must be 01–12.

How arXiv identifiers are structured

An arXiv identifier names a preprint on arXiv. The scheme changed twice, so a valid ID depends on when it was assigned.

  1. 1991 to March 2007 (old): archive/YYMMNNN, for example hep-th/9901001. The archive is a name such as hep-th, astro-ph or cond-mat; math, cs, nlin and q-bio may add a subject class like math.CA/0611800. The 3-digit number allows up to 999 per archive per month.
  2. April 2007 to December 2014: YYMM.NNNN, with a zero-padded 4-digit sequence number, for example 0706.0001 or 1412.7878.
  3. January 2015 onward: YYMM.NNNNN, a 5-digit sequence number, for example 1501.00001.
  4. Version: any of the forms can end in v plus a number starting at 1, such as 0706.0001v2. Without it the ID refers to the latest version.

There is no check digit, so this tool tests structure only: the pattern, a month of 01–12, a date inside the range of that scheme, and whether the digit count matches the year. Sequence numbers of all zeros are rejected because numbering starts at 1 (our reading of the spec).

Format only — not an arXiv lookup

This tool checks the identifier's shape entirely in your browser. It does not contact arXiv, so a pass does not confirm that a paper with this ID exists. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged.
