Belgian national number (rijksregisternummer) check.
Check the format and check digits of an 11-digit Belgian national number (NN / NISS), and read the century and sex. Format and checksum only. Controleer een rijksregisternummer op formaat en controlegetal.
How it works: take the first nine digits (YYMMDDNNN) as a number, divide by 97, and subtract the remainder from 97. That must equal the last two digits. For births from 2000, put a 2 in front of the nine digits first, so the tool tries both centuries. An odd NNN is male, even is female. Zo werkt het: 97 min (de eerste negen cijfers modulo 97) moet gelijk zijn aan de laatste twee cijfers; voor geboortes vanaf 2000 zet je eerst een 2 voor die negen cijfers.

How the Belgian national number is built
The national number (rijksregisternummer, numéro de registre national) has 11 digits, written YY.MM.DD-NNN-CC: the date of birth, a three-digit sequence number for people born the same day (odd for men, even for women), and two check digits.
Check digits: CC = 97 − (YYMMDDNNN mod 97). For people born in or after 2000, a 2 is placed before the nine digits first. Worked example from Dutch Wikipedia: 90.02.01-997-04, where 900201997 = 97 × 9,280,432 + 93, and 97 − 93 = 04. Because the century is not printed, this tool tries 19xx first, then 20xx, as python-stdnum does.
Special cases
- Bis numbers: the month can have 20 or 40 added; the tool reads the month modulo 20, as python-stdnum does.
- Unknown parts: a month or day of 00 means it was unknown, or the day’s sequence ran out. These are allowed. The date is checked on a best-effort basis only; the verdict rests on the checksum and month range.
Nederlands
Format and checksum only — not a registry lookup
This page checks format and checksum only. It cannot confirm that a number was ever issued or that it belongs to anyone; only the Belgian National Register can do that. Use of the number is legally restricted in Belgium, so do not collect or enter numbers you have no right to hold.

Privacy and scope
A national number is sensitive personal data. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or logged, and it checks format and checksum only, with no query to any Belgian government system. Do not enter numbers belonging to other people that you have no reason to hold.
