ECRA/ESA contractor licence lookup.

Electrical contracting businesses in Ontario carry an ECRA/ESA licence number issued by the Electrical Safety Authority. Check the number's shape here, then confirm it in ESA's own contractor locator.

Important, up front: a licence number that has the right length proves nothing. Only ESA's locator can show whether a business is licensed. The licence is held by the business, not by an individual electrician.

What ESA says about the number

ESA states the ECRA/ESA licence number has 7 digits and should appear on the contractor's vehicles, business cards and estimates. Its advice is to always ask to see it before hiring anyone for electrical work. A general contractor who subcontracts electrical work must use a Licensed Electrical Contractor.

If the contractor is not listed

ESA says to contact its Customer Service Centre (1-877-372-7233); it also offers an anonymous online report at licensing.esasafe.com/submit-a-licensing-complaint/.

Business versus person

Master Electricians have their own licence, separate from the ECRA/ESA business licence, and ESA says only a licensed electrical contracting business can be hired. To check an individual electrician's trade credential see the Skilled Trades Ontario register guide.

How many digits is an ECRA/ESA licence number?

Can I check a single electrician with this number?

No. The ECRA/ESA licence belongs to the business. Individual qualifications are a separate check.
