Quebec contractors doing construction or renovation work must hold a licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). The RBQ publishes a public Registre des détenteurs de licence searchable by contractor or licence number. Check the number's format here first.
Important, up front: the RBQ number is a 10-digit identifier written XXXX-XXXX-XX, and no check-digit rule is published. A well-formed number says nothing about status. The registry itself is the only source. Si le numéro est valide, vérifiez-le dans le registre officiel.

The number and the registry
The RBQ instructs licence holders to display the number as "Licence RBQ : XXXX-XXXX-XX", that is 10 digits in groups of 4, 4 and 2. Its guidance for citizens is to get the licence number from the contractor and enter it in the registry before hiring for renovation or construction work.
What the registry shows
According to the RBQ: business names and contact details, the Quebec enterprise number (NEQ), the RBQ licence number, licence categories and subcategories, the bonding association or company, any ongoing claims or indemnities paid, any public works restriction, and the qualified representatives (répondants) with their qualification areas. The registry lists holders with a valid licence, so a contractor who does not appear should be followed up with the RBQ (1 800 361-0761).
