Swiss AHV number validator.
Check a 13-digit Swiss AHV / AVS number (AHVN13): the 756 prefix and the EAN-13 check digit. Format and checksum only.
How it works: the current AHV number has 13 digits and begins with 756. The last digit is an EAN-13 check digit: weight the first twelve digits 1, 3, 1, 3 …, add them, and the check digit brings the total to a multiple of 10. The federal office states the number is random and carries no personal data, so there is no date or sex to decode.

How the AHV number is built
The Federal Social Insurance Office (BSV) says the AHV number has 13 digits and begins with 756, and that it is assigned once and stays the same for life. It describes the number as completely anonymous and randomly generated, with no link to name or date of birth. In German it is the AHV-Nummer (AHVN13), in French the numéro AVS, in Italian the numero AVS.
| Digits | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | 756, the country prefix |
| 4–12 | Nine digits specific to one person |
| 13 | Check digit |
Check digit: the BSV page does not describe the arithmetic. python-stdnum validates the number with the EAN-13 rule. Worked example from python-stdnum: 756.9217.0769.85. Weights 1, 3, 1, 3, … on 756921707698 give 7+15+6+27+2+3+7+0+7+18+9+24 = 125, so the check digit is (10 − 5) = 5, which matches. Changing it to …84 fails.

Format and checksum only — not a registry lookup
A passing result does not show the number was issued. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Swiss AHV / AVS Number FAQ
How many digits is a Swiss AHV number?
The current AHV number (AHVN13) has 13 digits and starts with 756, often written 756.XXXX.XXXX.XX.
Does an AHV number contain my birth date?
No. The Federal Social Insurance Office describes the number as randomly generated with no link to personal data, so this tool decodes nothing about the holder.
Is the AHV number the same as AVS?
Yes. AHV is the German name (Alters- und Hinterlassenenversicherung) and AVS the French one for the same number.
