Worked example

SAT goal 1400 with Reading and Writing already at 680: you need 720 on Math, since 680 plus 720 is 1400. College Board lists 1400 at the 97th nationally representative percentile and the 93rd user group percentile.

MCAT goal 515 with Chemical and Physical at 128 and Critical Analysis at 127: the other two sections must add to 260, which is 130 and 130. Percentile rank 91 for a 515. With 128 and 127 banked, the total can only land between 491 (118 on both) and 519 (132 on both).

How it works

College Board says the SAT total is the sum of the two sections, and AAMC says the MCAT total is the sum of the four sections, so the planner subtracts what you have from the goal. For the MCAT it spreads the remaining points as evenly as possible and flags goals outside 118 to 132 per section. The even spread is one way to reach the goal, not the only one. Goal percentiles are copied from the published tables.

Hitting a scaled score is not guaranteed by any plan, and the tool does not estimate how many questions that takes. Not affiliated with College Board or AAMC.

FAQ

What do I need on SAT Math to reach 1400 with 680 in Reading and Writing?

You need 720 on Math, because the SAT total is the sum of the two section scores and 680 plus 720 is 1400.

How does the MCAT planner split the remaining points?

It spreads them as evenly as possible. For a 515 goal with 128 and 127 already earned, the other two sections need 260 points, so 130 and 130.

What if my goal is out of reach?

The planner says so. For the MCAT it shows the lowest and highest totals still possible with your banked sections, using 118 to 132 per section.

Does this tell me how many questions I need to answer correctly?

No. It works with section scores only and does not convert a score back to a count of questions.
