Worked example

Verbal 160 is at the 82nd percentile and Quantitative 165 is at the 67th, so the higher Quantitative score ranks 15 percentile points lower. An Analytical Writing score of 4.5 is at the 85th percentile.

How it works

ETS defines a percentile rank as the percent of test takers who scored lower than a given score. The tool copies the value from ETS Table 1B (Verbal and Quantitative) and Table 1C (Analytical Writing), based on everyone who tested between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2025. ETS leaves a percentile blank where no test takers fell above or below the range, which is why Verbal 130 and Quantitative 130 to 132 show as not published.

ETS says scores from different measures should not be compared directly because each measure is scaled separately, and that percentile ranks are the way to compare them. That is why the gap line compares percentiles rather than scores. ETS also says Verbal and Quantitative scores reflect both the number of questions answered correctly and the difficulty of each section, so this tool starts from the scaled score and does not convert a raw count.

Not affiliated with ETS. ETS updates the interpretive data each year, so check your official score report.

FAQ

What GRE percentile is a 160 in Verbal?

In the ETS table for tests taken July 2022 to June 2025, a Verbal score of 160 is at the 82nd percentile, meaning 82 percent of test takers scored lower.

Why does Quantitative 165 have a lower percentile than Verbal 160?

Each measure is scaled separately and test takers score higher on Quantitative on average. A 165 Quantitative is at the 67th percentile while a 160 Verbal is at the 82nd.

What does a GRE percentile rank mean?

ETS defines it as the percent of test takers in the reference group who obtained scores lower than a specified score.

Does this convert my raw score to a 130 to 170 score?

No. It starts from the scaled score on your score report and looks up the published percentile.
