How do I turn a percentage into a letter grade?
A letter is assigned to every percentage at or above its cutoff and below the cutoff of the letter above it. To find the points needed for a letter on an assignment, multiply the total points by the cutoff percent and round up to the next point, because a student must reach the cutoff, not fall just short of it. With 45 points and an 80% cutoff the minimum is 36 points, and with a 90% cutoff it is 40.5 so 41 points. The letter-to-percent mapping is local policy: for example, Ontario's Growing Success document publishes report-card achievement bands of 50–59% (Level 1), 60–69% (Level 2), 70–79% (Level 3) and 80–100% (Level 4), while other schools use their own letter cutoffs.

What percent is an A?
It depends on the school. Many use 90 or 93, some use 85 or 80. Enter your own cutoffs above; the 90/80/70/60 values shown are only a starting example.
How many points do I need for a B on a 45-point test?
With a B cutoff of 80%, you need 36 of 45 points. Change the cutoff and the table updates.
Should the cutoff round up?
The tool rounds up so the minimum points never fall below the cutoff percent. If your policy rounds percents (for example 89.5 to 90) it will differ, so check your policy.
Can I add plus and minus grades?
Yes. Add lines like A- 87 or B+ 77 in order from highest to lowest.
