Worked example
SAT 1380 against a school range of 1340 to 1500: you are inside the middle 50%, 40 points above the 25th percentile score and 120 below the 75th. That puts you 25% of the way across the 160-point range. College Board lists 1380 at the 96th nationally representative percentile.
How it works
The school's 25th and 75th percentile scores bound the middle half of the group it reports, usually admitted or enrolled students. The tool checks whether your score is below the first, between the two, or above the second, and measures the gaps in points. Where a percentile table exists (SAT, LSAT, GMAT Focus, MCAT) it also shows your published national percentile; ACT percentiles are not included here. The score scales used for validation are 400 to 1600 (SAT), 1 to 36 (ACT), 120 to 180 (LSAT), 205 to 805 (GMAT Focus) and 472 to 528 (MCAT).
The reach, competitive and strong labels are a common rule of thumb, not a published standard. Admissions also weigh grades, essays and more, and each school sets its own policy. You supply the school's numbers, so check them against the school's own page. Not affiliated with any school or test owner.

FAQ
What does the 25th to 75th percentile range mean?
It is the middle half of the scores the school reports. A quarter of the group scored below the first number and a quarter above the second.
Does being inside the range mean I will be admitted?
No. Admissions also weigh grades, essays and other factors, and each school sets its own policy. The reach, competitive and strong labels here are a rule of thumb only.
Where do I get the school range?
Use the 25th and 75th percentile scores the school itself publishes, and check which group they describe, such as admitted or enrolled students.
Why is there no ACT percentile?
This tool copies percentiles only from tables it has opened. It validates ACT scores from 1 to 36 but does not show an ACT percentile.
