Worked example

Reading and Writing 620 plus Math 680 gives a total of 1300. College Board lists 1300 at the 91st percentile among a nationally representative sample and the 85th percentile among user group students. The 620 section score sits at 84 and 77, and the 680 section score at 93 and 88.

How it works

College Board says the SAT total is the sum of the two section scores, with totals from 400 to 1600 and section scores from 200 to 800. This tool adds your two scores and then looks each score up in College Board's published percentile tables. Nothing is estimated: the percentiles are copied from the tables.

A percentile is the percentage of students with scores equal to or lower than yours. Nationally representative percentiles come from a research study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade, weighted to represent all students in those grades whether or not they usually take the SAT. User group percentiles are based on the actual SAT scores of students who graduated in the past three school years. Values such as 99+ and 1- are shown exactly as College Board prints them.

This tool starts from the section scores on your score report. It does not convert a count of correct questions into a score.

Not affiliated with College Board. Percentile tables are updated by College Board, so check your official score report.

FAQ

How is the SAT total score calculated?

The total is the sum of the Reading and Writing section score and the Math section score. Each section runs from 200 to 800, so totals run from 400 to 1600. For example 620 plus 680 is 1300.

What is the difference between the two percentile columns?

Nationally representative percentiles come from a study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade weighted to represent all of them. User group percentiles come from the actual scores of students who graduated in the past three school years.

What does an SAT percentile mean?

It is the percentage of students with scores equal to or lower than yours. A total of 1300 at the 91st nationally representative percentile means about 91 percent of that comparison group scored 1300 or lower.

Can this estimate my score from questions I got right?

No. It starts from the section scores on your score report and does not convert a count of correct questions into a score.
