Shopify costs
Shopify third-party gateway fee, what it really costs.
Pick your plan and enter sales through an outside gateway. See Shopify's transaction fee, the gateway's own fee and the combined cost.
Total = sales x Shopify's third-party rate + the gateway's fees. On Basic, 10,000 of gateway sales over 200 orders at 2.9% + 0.30 costs 200.00 to Shopify plus 350.00 to the gateway: 550.00 in total, 5.5% of sales.

Worked example
A Basic store sells 10,000 through an outside gateway over 200 orders. Shopify's third-party fee is 2% x 10,000 = 200.00. A gateway charging 2.9% + 0.30 per order takes 10,000 x 2.9% + 200 x 0.30 = 350.00. Together that is 550.00, or 5.5% of sales. On Advanced the Shopify part drops to 0.6% (60.00), but you still pay the gateway.
How it works
Shopify fee = gateway sales x plan rate. The pricing pages for Canada, the UK and Australia list the same four rates: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Shopify Help says the fee applies to transactions processed through third-party and alternate payment gateways. Your gateway then charges its own percentage and fixed fee, which you enter from its pricing page. Shopify Help also lists PayPal as exempt from the fee when Shopify Payments is your primary provider; this calculator does not decide that for you, so set the gateway sales to the orders that actually attract the fee.
