Worked example

A customer pays $100.00 with a domestic card. Fee = $100.00 x 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20, so you keep $96.80 (3.20% effective). The fixed fee weighs more on small sales: the same rates cost 5.90% on a $10.00 sale but 2.93% on a $1,000.00 sale. To net the full $100.00, charge ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.30, rounded up to the cent.

How it works

Fee = sale x (percentage + extra percentage) + fixed fee. The presets are the Canadian card rates read on Stripe's pricing page on 2026-10-08: 2.9% + CA$0.30 per successful transaction for domestic cards, plus 0.5% for manually entered cards, 0.8% for international cards and 2% if currency conversion is required. Rates differ by country, plan and any custom pricing, so type your own if they differ.

Because part of the fee is a fixed amount, the effective rate falls as the sale grows. The table in the result shows the same rates on sales from $10 to $5,000. To pass the fee on, use the price shown or the gross-up calculator; for refunds, see the refund fee loss calculator.

FAQ

How much does Stripe take from a payment?

It depends on your country and plan. The Canadian pricing page read on 2026-10-08 lists 2.9% + CA$0.30 per successful domestic card transaction. This calculator applies whatever percentage and fixed fee you type, so check the current figure on Stripe and edit the fields.

How do I make sure I receive the full amount?

Charge (amount + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage). For $100.00 at 2.9% + $0.30 that is $103.30 after rounding up to the cent. Check whether your region lets you add a fee to the price.

Why is the effective rate higher on small sales?

The fixed fee is the same on every sale, so it is a bigger share of a small one. At 2.9% + $0.30 a $10.00 sale costs 5.90% and a $1,000.00 sale costs 2.93%.

Does this include currency conversion or international card fees?

Only if you enter them in the extra percentage box. Stripe's Canadian page lists 0.8% for international cards and 2% when currency conversion is required; confirm the amounts that apply to you.

Are taxes on the fee included?

No. This is an estimate of the processor fee only. It is not accounting or tax advice.
