Answer
Splitting 3,450 XP and 215 gp, 8 sp, 7 cp four ways gives each character 862 XP (2 left over) and 53 gp, 9 sp, 6 cp, with 0 gp, 0 sp, 3 cp left in the pot.
Worked example
All coins in copper: 215 gp x 100 + 8 sp x 10 + 7 cp = 21,587 cp. Divided by 4 that is 5,396 cp each, which is 53 gp, 9 sp and 6 cp, leaving 3 cp. XP: 3,450 / 4 = 862 each with 2 left over. With two half-share followers added (5 full shares in all), a character gets 690 XP and each follower 345.
How it works
Shares. Each full character counts as 2 half-shares and each follower as 1, so the pot is divided into 2 x characters + followers equal pieces. A character takes two pieces and a follower one. Everything is whole numbers; leftover XP and copper are shown, not rounded away.
Coins. All coins are converted to copper, divided, and converted back. The Basic Rules give one gold piece as ten silver pieces and one silver piece as ten copper pieces, so 1 gp = 100 cp. Platinum and electrum are not handled; convert them to gold first.
Your table. Many groups give leftover coins to whoever is holding the party purse, round in the group's favour or carry the remainder to the next session. This tool only does the arithmetic. Some tables award XP to each character separately rather than splitting a total, in which case you do not need a split at all.
Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-08): Basic Rules, Chapter 5: Equipment (D&D Beyond) for 1 gp = 10 sp and 1 sp = 10 cp; whole-number division otherwise.
FAQ
How do you split XP in D&D?
Many tables divide the total XP for an encounter by the number of characters. Enter the total and the number of full-share characters to get each share, with any remainder shown.
How do I split gold, silver and copper evenly?
Convert everything to copper (1 gp = 100 cp, 1 sp = 10 cp), divide by the number of shares, then convert back. This tool does it and shows the leftover copper.
What are half-share followers?
Hirelings or NPC allies who take half a character's share. Each counts as one half-share while a full character counts as two.
What happens to the leftover coins?
They stay in the party purse in this tool. Groups usually carry them forward or give them to whoever needs them; that is a table decision.
Does it handle platinum or electrum?
No. Convert platinum and electrum to gold or silver first.
