Worked example

A buyer outside Canada and the US pays $100.00. Fee = $100.00 x (2.90% + 1.00%) + $0.30 = $4.20, so you receive $95.80. Without the international add-on the fee would be $3.20. To net the full $100.00, charge ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.039) = $104.38, rounded up to the cent.

How it works

Fee = amount x (percentage + extra percentage) + fixed fee. The presets come from the PayPal Canada merchant fees page (updated 15 July 2026 on the page, opened 2026-10-08): commercial transactions 2.90% + a fixed fee, with C$0.30 as the fixed fee for Canadian dollars received, plus 0.80% when the buyer is in the US and 1.00% for all other countries. PayPal sets the fixed fee by currency received, and can change rates, so verify on PayPal before relying on a number.

Friends-and-family or personal payments and donations follow different tables and are not modelled here. For currency conversion, PayPal lists its own conversion rates; use the currency conversion fee calculator. To compare PayPal with another processor, use the Stripe vs PayPal comparison.
