How it is calculated

Fee = price × (percentage fee + any currency-conversion percentage) + fixed fee, rounded to the cent. You keep = price − fee. Price to charge for a target amount = (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − total percentage), rounded up to the cent and then checked so the net is never below the target.

Worked example: at 2.9% + $0.30 (domestic commercial transaction), a $100.00 sale costs $3.20, so you keep $96.80. To receive exactly $100.00 you charge $103.30, which carries a $3.30 fee.

QR code payments (1.20% domestic) and charity rates differ and are not modelled. PayPal says the Combined Financial Services Guide and Product Disclosure Statement prevails if it conflicts with the fee page. PayPal lists an A$15.00 card chargeback fee, which it says does not apply where the transaction is eligible for Seller Protection. It is not added to the sale calculation.

FAQ

What does PayPal charge in Australia?

On PayPal’s own pricing page, retrieved October 2026, the first rate is domestic commercial transaction at 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Other card types and currency conversion add to it; every rate is listed on this page and editable above.

How do I work out the price to charge so I receive an exact amount?

Divide the amount you want plus the fixed fee by one minus the percentage rate. At 2.9% + $0.30, receiving $100.00 means charging $103.30 (fee $3.30). The calculator rounds to the cent and checks that the net is never below your target.
