Two placeholder styles

The Latin style uses the 62-word vocabulary of the familiar lorem ipsum passage. The plain English style draws on common everyday words such as "the", "water" and "people", shuffled at random, so the result looks like English without making any sense. It suits designs where a reviewer might be distracted by Latin or you want realistic word lengths and letter patterns.

Counts are exact in both styles. Sentences are 8 to 16 words and paragraphs hold 3 to 6 sentences. The "Start with Lorem ipsum" option applies to the Latin style only.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

The Latin style follows the standard passage, an altered excerpt of sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). The words have been cut, reordered and changed, so it is not meaningful Latin.

Sources: Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, book 1 (Latin text, section 32); Lorem ipsum (Wikipedia, retrieved 2026-10).

Placeholder Text Generator FAQ

What is placeholder text?

Placeholder text is filler copy used so people judge a layout rather than its wording. Lorem ipsum is the best known example.

What is the difference between the Latin and English styles?

Latin uses the lorem ipsum vocabulary. English uses common everyday English words in random order, so it looks like English but has no meaning.

Why is "Start with Lorem ipsum" ignored in English style?

That opening phrase is Latin, so it only applies to the Latin style.

Can I repeat the same output?

Yes. Enter a seed and the same options and style always return identical text.
