Counts are exact

Asking for 3 paragraphs returns 3 paragraphs, 50 words returns 50 words and 200 characters returns 200 characters. A word is any run of text between spaces, so "amet," and "elit." each count as one. Sentences are 8 to 16 words long and paragraphs hold 3 to 6 sentences. The generator uses the 62-word Latin vocabulary of the familiar passage, so the output is shuffled placeholder text, not a quotation.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

The standard passage is an altered excerpt of sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum. Look for "dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit" in section 32 of the Latin. The words have been cut, reordered and changed, so the result is not meaningful Latin. Wikipedia traces its modern popularity to Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and later desktop publishing software.

Repeatable output

How to use placeholder text well

Lorem ipsum exists so that people reviewing a layout look at the layout and not at the words. That is also its limit: text that has no meaning cannot tell you whether a headline is too long, whether a button label is clear or whether a table will survive real data. Use it early, to judge typography, spacing and hierarchy, and replace it with real copy before you test anything that depends on content.

Worked example: sizing a blog template

You are designing an article card that shows a 20 word excerpt. Choose Words, enter 20 and press Generate: you get exactly 20 words, so every card has the same height. Then ask for 3 paragraphs to see a full article column at its normal reading width, and for 1 paragraph to check an introduction. To check that a card still works with a long title, generate 12 words and paste it into the title; then generate 3 words to test the opposite extreme. Using the same seed (type anything, such as card-v2) gives the same text each time, so screenshots from before and after a CSS change can be compared without the words moving around.

Worked example: character-limited fields

If a field is limited to 160 characters, choose Characters, enter 160, and paste the result. The output has exactly 160 characters, so you can confirm that the limit and truncation behave correctly. To test exactly one character past the limit, generate 161.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

The passage is a garbled adaptation of sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a first-century BC Latin work on ethics. The opening words "Lorem ipsum" look like a cut-off version of dolorem ipsum, "pain itself", and the Latin Library text of book 1 contains the original sentence about pain and pleasure. Latin scholar Richard McClintock identified the connection in the 1990s by looking up the rare word "consectetur" and published it in a 1994 letter. The text has been in use as typesetting filler since the late 1960s, when Letraset dry-transfer sheets popularised it, and the version in common use derives from Letraset sheets first published in 1966. Later, desktop publishing programs, word processors and web tools included it, which is why it is the default placeholder almost everywhere.

Because the words have been changed, added and removed, the result is not meaningful Latin, though a few real Latin words survive. Treat the popular story that it dates from a sixteenth-century printer as unproven; even the researcher who first connected the text to Cicero later acknowledged that the sixteenth-century origin was a guess.

What this generator does, specifically

• Exact counts. Paragraphs, sentences, words or characters, and the total you ask for is the total you get.
• Classic start. The first sentence can open with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." Untick the option when you need a block that does not start the same way every time.
• HTML output. Wrap each paragraph in a <p> element for pasting into a template or CMS.
• Repeatable seed. The same seed and settings give the same result, which helps with automated tests and screenshots.
• Private. Text is generated in your browser.

It does not generate other languages, names, addresses, headlines or images. For tests that need realistic content, such as a sorted list of names, use a data generator or real copy from the project.

Common mistakes with placeholder text

• Shipping it. Search the finished page for "lorem" and "ipsum" before publishing. Live pages with placeholder text look unfinished and give search engines nothing useful to index.
• Making every block the same length. Real content varies. Mix short and long paragraphs so the layout is tested against uneven text.
• Testing only with Latin. Languages with long words, such as German, or with no word spaces, such as Japanese, break layouts differently. Test those with real strings.
• Ignoring accessibility. Screen readers pronounce lorem ipsum as nonsense, so keep it out of anything a person might test with assistive technology.
