Exactly 500 words
Words are counted as runs of text between spaces, so "amet," and "elit." each count as one word. The 500 words come out as one continuous block of 8 to 16 word sentences. If you want paragraph breaks, use the paragraph option on the main lorem ipsum generator.
Where lorem ipsum comes from
The standard passage is an altered excerpt of sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). Look for "dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit" in section 32 of the Latin. The placeholder words have been cut, reordered and changed, so the result is not meaningful Latin.
Sources: Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, book 1 (Latin text, section 32); Lorem ipsum (Wikipedia, retrieved 2026-10).
