What is checked, and where each rule comes from
Rules were read from the official Square pages below on 2026-10-18. Square strongly recommends the Excel (.xlsx) template; if you use CSV, keep the template's columns and headers, since Square says changed, reordered or deleted columns cause import errors. Columns: Item Name, Variation Name, Description and SKU must be present, and the Token column and header must be kept. Tax headers look like Tax - Sales (7%). Item Type: Standard, Prepared food and beverage, Physical good, Event, Digital, Other, Bundle, Service or Donation (blank imports as Standard). Price is a number, or blank / Variable. New Quantity replaces the existing quantity. Modifier sets: Y applies, blank turns off. Reporting Category: one per item. SKUs: Square warns that opening a CSV directly in a spreadsheet editor can strip SKU leading zeros; a note appears when numeric SKUs look affected. Unit type and precision cannot be created from a CSV and abbreviations cause errors, which this tool cannot see without your account.

Frequently asked questions
Can I import a CSV into the Square item library?
Yes, but Square strongly recommends the .xlsx template. With CSV you must enter unit type and precision manually using the full name, and spreadsheet editors can strip leading zeros from SKUs.
Which columns are required?
Item Name, Variation Name, Description and SKU, and Square says to keep the Token column. An Enabled column per location is required if you have more than one location.
Why did my import fail after I deleted a column?
Square says changing, reordering or deleting template columns results in an error. Start from a fresh export of your library.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It stays in your browser.
