How the ACT Composite is calculated
ACT says your Composite score is the average of your English, math and reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Fractions less than one-half round down; fractions of one-half or more round up. With three sections, the average ends in .33 or .67 when it is not whole, so it rounds down or up accordingly. Example: 20, 21 and 21 average 20.67, which rounds to 21.
ACT began phasing out Science as part of the Composite for National online testing in April 2025, and in September 2025 all ACT tests used the updated calculation when new Composite and Superscores were generated. Science is optional and is reported separately. ACT also reports STEM scores based on math and science, which are not part of the Composite and not calculated here.
This tool covers the current three-section Composite only. Scores reported before the change may have used a different calculation, so check your official ACT score report.
