How the percentile is calculated
This tool uses the standard statistical percentile rank formula — the same method used to report percentiles for standardized test scores — adapted for a class rank where rank 1 is the top student:
Percentile = (Class size − Rank + 0.5) ÷ Class size × 100
The "+0.5" is the midpoint adjustment the formula uses so that the single top rank in a class doesn't get rounded all the way up to the 100th percentile, and the single bottom rank doesn't get rounded down to the 0th — both sit just inside the range instead, which is the conventional treatment of individually-ranked (non-tied) positions.
The result is also shown as "top X%," which is simply 100 minus the percentile — the more common way rank is quoted in college-admissions contexts.
Sources, and when they were checked
Checked on 29 September 2026. Note this is a straightforward statistical conversion of the two numbers you already have (your rank and your class size) — it is not itself the source of your official rank or percentile, which stays whatever your school's registrar or transcript reports.
