Worked example

Using the placeholder numbers: the sew-in is $300 of hair lasting 6 months ($50 a month) plus a $150 install every 7 weeks ($92.86 a month), $142.86. The lace wig is $400 over 12 months ($33.33) plus a $60 install every 6 weeks ($43.33), $76.67. The tape-in is $250 over 9 months ($27.78) plus a $200 refit every 7 weeks ($123.81), $151.59. The cheapest saves $74.92 a month, $899.05 a year, against the dearest. Replace every number with your own quotes.

How it works

Per month = hair price / months the hair lasts + install fee x (52 / 12) / weeks between installs. Per year = per month x 12. The cheapest and dearest methods and the gap between them are shown.

All example numbers in the form are placeholders. The lifespans the guides quote are 6 to 8 weeks for a sew-in or tape-in refit, up to six weeks for a lace front held by adhesive, and for a well-maintained human hair lace front wig up to a year of daily wear or up to three years of occasional wear. How long hair actually lasts depends on its quality and care.

FAQ

Is a lace wig cheaper than a sew-in?

It depends on your prices and how long the hair lasts. Enter both and compare the cost per month; the placeholder numbers here are examples, not typical prices.

How long does a sew-in last compared with tape-ins?

Curl Centric says a sew-in lasts 6 to 8 weeks, and Cliphair says tape-ins are designed to last 6 to 8 weeks before a refit.

How long does a lace front wig last?

Curl Centric says a very good quality, well-maintained human hair lace front wig lasts up to 3 years with occasional wear or up to 1 year with daily wear.

How do I compare methods fairly?

Use the same period for all of them. This tool converts each into a cost per month from the hair price, its lifespan, the install fee and the weeks between installs.
