Tutoring cost = hourly rate x hours per session x sessions per week x weeks, plus any extras. At $60 an hour, one hour a week for 30 weeks costs $1,800, or $150 a month if spread over 12 months.

Arithmetic only. No tutoring prices are built in; rates vary widely by subject, tutor and region. Every figure comes from what you enter.

Worked example

At $60 an hour, one 60-minute session a week for 30 weeks costs $60.00 a session, $60.00 a week and $1,800 in total ($150.00 a month spread over 12 months). A second plan at $50 an hour, two 90-minute sessions a week for 20 weeks, with $5 extra per session and a $100 assessment costs $3,300 for 60 hours ($55.00 per hour including extras). Against a $30 an hour group rate the same schedule costs $2,100, a difference of $1,200.

How it works

Cost per session = hourly rate x minutes / 60 + extra per session. Weekly = session cost x sessions per week. Total = weekly x weeks + one-time costs. Monthly = total / 12. Effective cost per hour = total / total tutoring hours. If you add a second rate, the same schedule and extras are priced at that rate and the totals are compared.

FAQ

How much does tutoring cost per year?

It depends on the rate and schedule. Multiply the hourly rate by hours per session, sessions per week and weeks, then add extras. For example $60 an hour for 30 one-hour sessions is $1,800.

How is the monthly cost worked out?

The total for the program divided by 12. If you only pay during the school months, divide the total by the number of months you pay instead.

How do I compare a private tutor with a group class?

Enter the private rate as the hourly rate and the group rate in the second box. The calculator prices the same schedule at both rates and shows the difference.

Are travel or materials costs included?

Only if you enter them. Use extra cost per session for travel or materials and one-time costs for assessments or books.

Does it include tax?

No. If tutoring is taxed in your region, increase the rate you enter or add the tax as an extra.
