Many provinces do not charge sales tax on infant formula. Leave tax at 0 unless your receipt shows it. Check the label for the yield, such as "makes about 120 fl oz".

Not medical advice. This is a budgeting tool, not feeding advice. How much your baby needs is for you and your care team to decide; see the formula amount calculator for general reference amounts.

Worked example

A baby drinks 24 oz a day. A $40 tin makes about 120 oz, so one tin lasts 5 days. That is $8.00 a day, about $243.50 a month and $2,922 a year, or about 6.1 tins a month.

How it works

Tins per day = daily amount divided by what one tin makes. Cost per day = tins per day x tin price (plus any tax). A month is 365.25 / 12 = 30.44 days. If you mix extra that gets thrown out, enter it as a percent and the daily amount is raised by that share. mL and oz are converted at 29.5735 mL per fl oz.

The yield differs by brand and by powder, concentrate or ready-to-feed, so it is always your number from the label. Prices here are what you enter, not a survey.

Sources and basis: arithmetic on the numbers you enter. No external price or intake figure is applied. Tin yield comes from your product label.

FAQ

How much does formula cost per month?

It depends on the price and yield of the tin and how much your baby drinks. For example, 24 oz a day from a $40 tin that makes 120 oz comes to about $243 a month.

How many tins of formula do I need per month?

Daily amount x 30.44 days divided by what one tin makes. In the example that is about 6.1 tins.

Where do I find how much one tin makes?

On the label, usually as the number of fluid ounces or mL of prepared formula per tin or per scoop count.

Does the calculator include wasted formula?

Yes, if you enter a percent. Leftover mixed formula should be thrown out according to the label, so some waste is normal.

Why is a year 365.25 days?

That averages leap years so the yearly figure is not off by a day every fourth year.
