Worked example
3 bundles at $60 is $180 of hair. Add a $90 closure, a $150 install and $30 of products: $450 before the tip. A 15% tip on the $150 install fee is $22.50, plus $4 for one assistant, so the tip is $26.50 and the total is $476.50. Hair is 40% of the pre-tip cost.
How it works
hair = bundles x price per bundle. subtotal = hair + closure or frontal + install fee + products. tip = tip % x (install fee, or the whole subtotal if you choose that) + assistants x tip per assistant. total = subtotal + tip.
Nothing is assumed: use the prices on your quote. Some stylists include the hair in their price, and some let you bring your own, so enter 0 where something is not billed. Tax is not added.
Sources and basis
Checked 2026-10-15. Curl Centric: How Much Is a Sew-In? Install and Hair Costs, Piece by Piece reports typical ranges of about $100 to $500 for the install, about $80 to $600 for hair, $20 to $100 for a trim, a tip of 10% to 25% of the bill plus about $3 to $5 per assistant, and about $180 to $1,100 for install and hair together, with a closure or frontal, add-ons and tip extra. It also states it could not find an independent survey of sew-in prices, so treat those ranges as indicative only. Calculation: arithmetic on the figures you enter.

FAQ
How much does a sew-in cost in total?
Curl Centric reports about 100 to 500 dollars for the install and 80 to 600 dollars for hair, so roughly 180 to 1,100 dollars together, before a closure or frontal, add-ons and tip. It says it found no independent price survey, so use your own quote.
How much should I tip for a sew-in?
Curl Centric reports a tip of 10 to 25 percent of the bill, plus about 3 to 5 dollars for each assistant who helped. This tool lets you apply the percent to the install fee only or to the whole bill.
Is the closure or frontal included in the install price?
Not usually. Curl Centric lists a closure or frontal as a separate piece that adds to the hair cost, so enter its price in its own box.
Can I bring my own hair to cut the cost?
Some stylists let you bring your own hair and others supply it at an extra charge, according to Curl Centric. Enter 0 for bundles if the hair is not billed.
Does the total include tax?
No. Add any sales tax your salon charges to the figure shown.
