Worked example

UK seller, £30 item, £4 postage charged, no buyer tax. The base for the transaction and regulatory fees is £34.00. Transaction fee: 6.5% = £2.21. Processing: 4% x £34 + £0.20 = £1.56. Regulatory operating fee: 0.48% = £0.16. Fees total £3.93 before the listing fee, so you receive £30.07 and profit after £8 item cost, £1 packaging and £3 postage is £18.07. To make £12 profit on those costs, list at £23.18. If VAT at 20% is charged on the fees they become £4.72 and profit £17.28.

How it works

Transaction fee. Etsy's Fee Basics page gives 6.5% of the total cost of the item together with shipping and gift wrap if you charge for them. Payment processing. For a seller with a UK bank account Etsy lists 4% + 0.20 GBP of the total sale price, which Etsy says includes shipping and any applicable sales tax. Regulatory operating fee. Etsy's help article lists 0.48% for the United Kingdom, charged on item price plus shipping, gift wrap and personalisation.

Listing fee. A flat US$0.20 per listing, charged when you publish, and again when an auto-renewed listing sells or for each extra item bought from a multi-quantity listing. Because it is set in dollars, you enter the pound figure yourself.

VAT. Etsy says payment processing fees are subject to VAT, collected and shown on a VAT invoice for sellers in required locations, and the same for the regulatory fee "where applicable". The rate box defaults to 0 so the tool never assumes a charge your invoice may not show; set it to 20 if Etsy charges you VAT on fees.

Limits

Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads (see the Etsy offsite ads fee calculator), shipping labels bought on Etsy, currency conversion fees, deposit fees and tax on your profit are not modelled. Etsy changes fee rates by country; the regulatory fee rose to 0.48% for the United Kingdom in 2026 and older guides still show lower figures.
