Worked example

A private seller lists 350 items in a month and sells one for £50 plus £5 postage, delivered in the UK. There is no final value fee, so sale fees are £0.00 and the sale leaves £55.00. Listing fees for the month: 50 listings over the 300 free x 35p = £17.50. Profit on this sale after £20 item cost, £5 postage and £1 packaging: £29.00. If the same item is delivered to an overseas address the 3% international fee on £55 is £1.65 and profit is £27.35. With an eBay Shop the free allowance is 400, so the same month has no listing fees.

How it works

No final value fee. eBay's private seller page says UK-based private sellers do not pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when items sell (motors listings are the exception). That is the headline "free selling" rule.

Listing fees. 300 free listings per month, 400 with an eBay Shop subscription, then 35p per additional listing. This is a monthly cost, so the calculator shows it as its own note and leaves it out of the profit on a single sale.

International fee. A 3% fee applies to the total sale, including postage, when the item goes to an overseas address.

VAT. eBay says all fees on the private seller page include VAT at 20%, so no further VAT is added.

Limits

Optional upgrades (reserve price 4% of the reserve with a £50 minimum and £150 maximum, subtitle £2, Gallery Plus £2.50 outside the free categories, listing in two categories, special duration) and Promoted Listings are not modelled. Private sellers living outside the UK pay 12.8% plus 30p and a 0.42% regulatory fee, which this page does not model. If you sell regularly or as a business, eBay's business seller fees apply instead; use the UK business seller calculator.
