United States · Real Estate Licensing
Real estate license lookup by state.
In the United States, real estate agents and brokers are licensed by each state, so there is no single national lookup. This page links to the official public search for six states and explains what to check.
Short answer: pick the state where the agent is licensed, open that state’s official search, and confirm the name, licence type and status. This page does not look anyone up.
How to check a real estate license
Each state regulator below runs its own public search. Search by the licensee’s name or licence number, and note the licence type (salesperson, broker, or company) and the status shown. Where a state publishes disciplinary information, it is usually reached from the same search or an adjacent page.
If you cannot find a person, try a different spelling of the name, search the brokerage instead, or ask the licensee for their licence number and the state that issued it.

When to check a real estate license
Typical reasons: before signing a listing or buyer-representation agreement, before sending a deposit to a brokerage, or when an unfamiliar agent contacts you about a property.
Licensed in a different state?
A licence from one state does not automatically apply in another. Check the state where the property is located, using that state’s regulator above.
Other states
This page covers six states. For any other state, search for that state’s real estate commission or department of licensing and use the licensee search on its official (.gov or state) website.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a national real estate license lookup?
No. Real estate licences are issued by each state, so you search the regulator for the state where the agent is licensed. This page links to six of them.
What should I look for in the result?
The licensee’s name, the licence type (for example salesperson or broker), the status, and the expiry date if the state shows one. Compare it with what the agent gave you.
Does this page verify an agent for me?
No. It links to the official public searches and does not query or copy any register.
What if I cannot find the agent?
Try alternate spellings, search by licence number, or search the brokerage. If you still cannot confirm, contact the state regulator directly.
Guide only — not a verification tool
This page describes official registers and links to them. It does not check anyone’s licence status, does not copy or proxy any register, and nothing you might type here is transmitted anywhere. Registers change and licensing rules differ by state and city; use the official source linked above and contact the regulator to confirm anything that matters. This is general information, not legal advice.
