United States · Trades Licensing

HVAC license search by state.

Heating and air-conditioning licences are issued by state boards and agencies (and in some places by cities or counties). This page lists official searches for six states.

Short answer: open the licensing agency for the state where the work is done and search the contractor or technician. This page does not look anyone up.

How to check an HVAC contractor’s license

Search the state agency for the job location using the contractor’s business name, personal name or licence number. Texas licenses air conditioning contractors and technicians through TDLR; Virginia lists HVAC among its tradesman licences.

Official state searches

Before you hire

Ask for the HVAC contractor or technician’s licence number and the state that issued it, then search it on the official page above. Compare the name and business name, and check the status shown. Many jurisdictions also require a permit for the work; your local building department can tell you.

States not listed

This page lists a selection of states, not all fifty. Some states license trades at the city or county level rather than the state level. For any other state, search for the state licensing board or department of labor/licensing, or ask your local building department.

Illinois

Illinois: the IDFPR lookup’s licence-type list (retrieved October 2026) has no electrician, plumber or HVAC entry, so a search there will not find one. Ask your city or county building department which agency licenses the trade locally.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national HVAC license lookup?

No. HVAC licensing is set by each state (and sometimes by cities or counties), so you search the agency for the state where the work is done.

What does the Texas TDLR search list for HVAC?

Its licence types include A/C Technicians and Air Conditioning Contractors Associate, and the ACR Certification Training Program.

Does this page confirm an HVAC contractor is licensed?

No. It links to the official searches only.

My state is not listed. What do I do?

Search for your state’s contractor or HVAC licensing board, or ask your local building department.

Guide only — not a verification tool

This page describes official registers and links to them. It does not check anyone’s licence status, does not copy or proxy any register, and nothing you might type here is transmitted anywhere. Registers change and licensing rules differ by state and city; use the official source linked above and contact the regulator to confirm anything that matters.
