FINRA BrokerCheck lookup for brokers and firms.
FINRA BrokerCheck is the free tool FINRA provides to research professionals who sell securities, provide financial advice or both. This guide explains what to look for and sends you to the official tool.
Important, up front: this is a guide, not a verification service. It links to the official register and never queries it for you. The live record on the official site is the only thing that confirms a licence or registration.
How to check, step by step
- Get the full legal name of the broker or firm. If you have a CRD number, keep it handy: BrokerCheck is run by FINRA and its records are keyed on it, so it can help tell two people with the same name apart.
- Open BrokerCheck at brokercheck.finra.org and search for the individual or firm.
- Select “More Details” under the name to open the summary report with employment history, qualifications and disclosure events.
- If the person is an investment adviser rather than a FINRA-registered broker, follow the profile link to the SEC’s IAPD database (see the IAPD guide below).
- Compare what you find with what the person told you: name, firm, how long they have been registered.
BrokerCheck covers the people and firms registered through FINRA. Per FINRA, it can also be used to look up investment advisers who are not FINRA-registered; for SEC-registered advisers the profile links to the SEC’s IAPD database.
FINRA publishes a BrokerCheck Help Line at (800) 289-9999 for questions about a report.

Frequently asked questions
What can I search for in BrokerCheck?
FINRA describes BrokerCheck as a tool to research professionals who sell securities, provide financial advice or both, and it can be used for firms as well as individuals. Use the official page to see the current search options.
What does a BrokerCheck report show?
Per FINRA, the summary report you reach through “More Details” shows employment history, qualifications and disclosure events.
Is a broker the same as an investment adviser?
Not necessarily. FINRA says advisers who are not FINRA-registered can still be looked up, and SEC-registered advisers link to the SEC’s IAPD database. Check both if you are unsure.
Does this page check the broker for me?
No. This page never queries FINRA and never sees what you type. It only links to the official tool. Only the live BrokerCheck record is authoritative.
