How to text to octal by hand

Each character has a code number. Write that number in base 8 by dividing by 8 repeatedly: 72 ÷ 8 = 9 remainder 0, 9 ÷ 8 = 1 remainder 1, 1 ÷ 8 = 0 remainder 1. Read the remainders backwards and you get 110.

Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so ASCII characters give one three-digit group each, and characters like é give two (303 251). Choose the separator to match how you will use the result, for example a backslash prefix for string escapes.
