How to read the ASCII table

ASCII is a 7-bit character set, so every code is a number from 0 through 127. Decimal 65, hexadecimal 0x41, octal 0o101 and binary 01000001 are four ways to write the same value: uppercase A.

Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters created for terminals and data transmission. Code 32 is space. Codes 33–126 are printable punctuation, digits and English letters. UTF-8 preserves these first 128 values exactly, then uses multiple bytes for other Unicode characters.

Primary sources: RFC 20, ASCII format for network interchange, and RFC 3629, UTF-8. Values checked 3 October 2026.

ASCII table FAQ

What is the ASCII code for A?

Uppercase A is decimal 65, hex 0x41, octal 0o101 and binary 01000001. Lowercase a is decimal 97.

How many characters are in ASCII?

There are 128 positions, numbered 0 through 127. ASCII is 7-bit; so-called “extended ASCII” tables are separate 8-bit code pages and are not one universal extension.

Is ASCII the same as UTF-8?

No. UTF-8 encodes all Unicode characters, but byte values 0–127 match ASCII. That is why ordinary English ASCII text is already valid UTF-8.
