Gaming · Minecraft damage
Minecraft armor damage reduction calculator.
Armor blocks 4% of a hit per armor point at best, never more than 80%, and the share shrinks as the hit gets bigger. The wiki formula is reduction = min(20, max(armor ÷ 5, armor − 4 × damage ÷ (toughness + 8))) ÷ 25. Example: a full diamond set (20 armor, 8 toughness) blocks 73% of a 7 HP hit, so you take 1.89 HP; Protection IV on all four pieces then cuts that to 0.68 HP.

How Minecraft armor reduces damage
Two numbers decide it: the armor points you wear and your armor toughness. Per the Minecraft Wiki, the reduction is min(20, max(armor ÷ 5, armor − 4 × damage ÷ (toughness + 8))) ÷ 25. Read it as a sliding scale. A small hit is blocked at close to 4% per armor point; as the hit grows the blocked share falls toward a floor of one fifth of that, which is 0.8% per point. Toughness raises the denominator, so a big hit hurts armor less. Nothing can exceed 80%.
Enchantments come second and only act on what got through. Protection adds 1 protection factor per level on each piece, and Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection add 2 per level for their own damage type. The factors of every piece add up, are capped at 20, and the reduction is factor ÷ 25. Resistance then removes 20% per level. The percentages multiply, so the order of Resistance and enchantments does not change the answer.
Worked examples with real numbers
- Full iron, 7 HP hit. 15 armor, no toughness: 15 − 4 × 7 ÷ 8 = 11.5, so 11.5 ÷ 25 = 46% blocked and 7 × 0.54 = 3.78 HP taken.
- Full diamond, 7 HP hit. 20 − 4 × 7 ÷ 16 = 18.25, so 73% blocked and 1.89 HP taken. With Protection IV on all four pieces the factor is 16, a further 64% off: 1.89 × 0.36 = 0.68 HP.
- Breaking point. The wiki defines it as armor × (toughness + 8) ÷ 5. For full diamond that is 64 HP: any single hit of 64 HP or more is blocked at only 16%, because no armor can fall below one fifth of its maximum.
Full sets against a 7 HP hit
| Full set | Armor points | Toughness | Reduction from a 7 HP hit | Damage taken | Breaking point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | 7 | 0 | 14% | 6.02 HP | 11.2 HP |
| Copper | 10 | 0 | 26% | 5.18 HP | 16 HP |
| Golden | 11 | 0 | 30% | 4.9 HP | 17.6 HP |
| Chainmail | 12 | 0 | 34% | 4.62 HP | 19.2 HP |
| Iron | 15 | 0 | 46% | 3.78 HP | 24 HP |
| Diamond | 20 | 8 | 73% | 1.89 HP | 64 HP |
| Netherite | 20 | 12 | 74.4% | 1.79 HP | 80 HP |
Diamond against netherite as the hit grows
Netherite has the same 20 armor points as diamond but 12 toughness instead of 8, so it keeps more of its protection against big hits. Netherite also gives knockback resistance, which this calculator does not model.
| Incoming hit | Diamond blocks | Diamond takes | Netherite blocks | Netherite takes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 HP | 78% | 0.44 HP | 78.4% | 0.43 HP |
| 5 HP | 75% | 1.25 HP | 76% | 1.2 HP |
| 10 HP | 70% | 3 HP | 72% | 2.8 HP |
| 20 HP | 60% | 8 HP | 64% | 7.2 HP |
What this calculator leaves out
It covers the armor and toughness formula, protection enchantments and Resistance. It does not model the Breach enchantment on a mace, Thorns, armor durability loss, difficulty scaling of mob damage, or damage types that ignore armor such as drowning, starvation and void damage. Wolf armor also has toughness but is not in the preset list. Enter the incoming damage yourself from the wiki page for the mob or weapon you are planning for.

Common mix-ups
-
Often assumedArmor blocks a fixed percentage, so a full set of diamond always blocks the same share of every hit.
What the source saysThe wiki says armor does not protect linearly: a full diamond set reduces a zombie attack by 77% but a piglin brute attack by only 67%, and the total reduction cannot fall below 20% of its maximum. [1]
-
Often assumedArmor toughness is just extra armor points.
What the source saysToughness only slows how fast armor loses effectiveness as incoming damage rises. Only diamond, netherite and wolf armor have it, and the wiki says it stops applying once the breaking point is reached. [1]
-
Often assumedProtection IV on every piece stacks with armor to give 100% protection.
What the source saysThe wiki says enchantment reduction applies only to the damage that got through armor, the protection factors cap at 20, and the maximum reduction from enchantments is 4/5, or 80%. [1]

Frequently asked questions
How is armor damage reduction calculated in Minecraft?
Reduction = min(20, max(armor / 5, armor - 4 x damage / (toughness + 8))) / 25. Each armor point blocks up to 4% of a hit, the share drops as the hit grows, and the cap is 80%.
How much damage does full diamond armor block?
Full diamond is 20 armor points with 8 toughness. Against a 7 HP hit it blocks 73%, so you take 1.89 HP. Against a 20 HP hit it blocks 60%, so you take 8 HP.
Is netherite armor better than diamond?
Both have 20 armor points. Netherite has 12 toughness against 8 for diamond, so it blocks slightly more of big hits: 74.4% against 73% on a 7 HP hit. Netherite also adds knockback resistance, which is outside this calculator.
What is armor toughness in Minecraft?
Toughness reduces how much armor weakens against high-damage hits. Diamond armor has 2 per piece and netherite 3 per piece, so 8 and 12 for a full set. It does not add armor points by itself.
Does Protection IV stack with armor?
Yes, but only on the damage that gets through armor. Protection IV is 4 protection factor per piece, so four pieces make 16 and cut the remaining damage by 64%. All enchantment factors together cap at 20, or 80%.
What is the armor breaking point?
Armor points times (toughness + 8), divided by 5. At or above that hit size armor blocks only its minimum share, one fifth of its maximum. For full diamond it is 64 HP and for full iron 24 HP.
