Machines needed per minute.
One recipe, one answer. Enter what a craft makes and how long it takes, then either a target rate or a machine count.
Sometimes you do not need a whole chain planner, just one number: how many of this machine for that much output. This page does that single step and also runs it backwards, so you can check what the machines you already built actually produce.
Short answer: one machine makes output x speed x 60 / seconds items a minute. In the example below that is 28.125 a minute, so 45 a minute needs 1.60 machines, which is 2 when rounded up.
The one formula
The Factorio Lua API defines a recipe's time as the seconds it takes at crafting speed 1, and faster machines shorten it. Put together with the output count, one machine makes output x speed x 60 / seconds items a minute. Everything on this page is that line, rearranged.
For a target rate, divide the target by one machine's rate and round up. For a machine count, multiply the count by one machine's rate. The tool also reports seconds per item (craft time / (output x speed)), which is handy when a game shows time per item rather than per craft, and utilisation, which is the target divided by what the rounded-up machines can make.
Belts and lanes
If you enter a belt or lane capacity in items per minute, the tool divides the target by it and rounds up to tell you how many belts or lanes the output needs. Find the capacity in your game's own item or transport screen; it varies by tier and by game.
Worked example
Invented numbers, no game attached. A recipe makes 3 items every 8 seconds, and the machine runs at speed 1.25. One machine makes 3 x 1.25 x 60 / 8 = 28.125 items a minute, or one item every 2.133 seconds. For 45 a minute: 45 / 28.125 = 1.60, so build 2. Two machines make 56.25 a minute, so they run at 80% of capacity. If one lane carries 60 a minute, 1 lane is enough. Going the other way, 3 of these machines make 84.38 a minute.
What this page does not cover
It does not model power draw, ingredient supply, modules or beacons that change speed (enter the final speed multiplier yourself), productivity bonuses that add free output (fold the bonus into items per craft), or machines that idle waiting for ingredients.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the craft time?
Most games show it on the recipe or machine screen. Use the time for one craft at the machine speed you are actually using, or enter the base time and the speed multiplier separately.
Why not just round to the nearest machine?
Rounding down leaves you short of the target. Rounding up gives you a surplus and idle time. The tool shows the exact figure so you can choose.
What if the recipe makes several items?
Enter the number made per craft. The rate scales with it.
How do bonuses that add free output work?
Multiply items per craft by the bonus, for example 1.4 x 3 = 4.2, and use that number.
What does utilisation mean?
The share of the rounded-up machines' capacity your target uses. 80% means the machines would idle about one fifth of the time.

Sources and how it is calculated

The rate rule comes from the recipe time definition in the Factorio Lua API (version 2.1.23, retrieved 26 October 2026). The demand evidence is the Rise of Industry thread, where a player asks for a tool to calculate how much industry is needed and a reply notes "The recipes/ratios change from version to version", and the FOUNDRY thread asking for a tool that shows machine counts per minute. Quotes were read on the pages on 26 October 2026.
- Factorio Lua API 2.1.23, RecipePrototype: energy_required is the number of seconds to craft at crafting speed 1; higher speeds shorten it

Check the numbers in your game
The examples use invented numbers. Games patch recipes, prices and speeds, so enter the values from your own screen and treat the result as a planning estimate.
