How Nether portal coordinates work

According to the Minecraft Wiki, horizontal coordinates and distances in the Nether are proportional to the Overworld in a 1:8 ratio. Going from the Overworld to the Nether, X and Z are divided by 8 and rounded down; going from the Nether to the Overworld, X and Z are multiplied by 8. The Y coordinate is not scaled.

When you step through a portal, the game looks for a linked portal near the converted point. In Java Edition the search area is 256 by 256 blocks (a 128-block radius) in the Overworld and 32 by 32 blocks (a 16-block radius) in the Nether. In Bedrock Edition it is 256 by 256 blocks (a 128-block radius) in both dimensions. If nothing is found in range, the game creates a new portal.

The suggested build coordinate is the converted point itself. Building the portal there puts it at the centre of the search area, so the two portals link to each other. Two portals closer together than the search range can link to the same partner, so keep linked pairs well apart.
