Gaming Calculators

Game download time.

Enter the download size in gigabytes and your internet speed in megabits per second. Internet speeds are quoted in bits and files in bytes, so the speed is divided by 8 first. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Inputs

GB

Decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB), as store pages and download clients usually show it.

Mbps
%

Real downloads are often below the plan speed. Try 80 to 90 for a conservative estimate; this is an assumption, not a measurement.

GB

Leave blank for unlimited.

Fill the form and press Calculate.

Worked example

A 100 GB game on a 100 Mbps connection: 100 Mbps / 8 = 12.5 MB/s, so 100 GB (100,000 MB) takes 100,000 / 12.5 = 8000 seconds, or 2 h 13 min 20 s. If you only get 80% of your speed (10 MB/s), the same download takes 2.78 hours and uses 10% of a 1,000 GB monthly cap.

How it works

MB per second = Mbps x efficiency / 8, and time = size in MB / MB per second. The Data-rate units - Wikipedia article states that a 1 Mbit/s connection is a maximum of 0.125 MB/s and that a byte is 8 bits. Sizes use decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB). Some operating systems show binary units instead, so a file may display as a slightly smaller number than the store page; see Binary prefix - Wikipedia.

Real downloads vary with server load, Wi-Fi, other devices and your provider, and a game may also spend time verifying or installing files after the download finishes. Treat the result as an estimate.

FAQ

How long does it take to download 100 GB?

At 100 Mbps it is about 2 hours 13 minutes if you get the full speed. At 1,000 Mbps it is about 13 minutes 20 seconds. Real speeds are often lower.

How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Divide by 8, because a byte is 8 bits. 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s.

Why is my download slower than my plan speed?

Server limits, Wi-Fi quality, other devices on the network and provider congestion all reduce real speed. The efficiency box lets you model that.

Does a game download count against my data cap?

Yes, a download counts as data used. Enter your cap to see what share of it a single download uses. Updates and patches count too.

Why does the game size on disk differ from the download?

Downloads can be compressed or include temporary files, and some systems display binary units. Use the size your launcher quotes for the download.
