Worked example
Four people share a weekend: Alex and Sam for 3 days, Jo for 2 and Kim for 1. Alex paid the 600.00 cabin (shared by days, 9 days in all), Sam 160.00 of groceries and Jo 80.00 of gas (both equal), and Kim 60.00 of wine, with Jo left out. Shares are Alex 280.00, Sam 280.00, Jo 193.33, Kim 146.67, out of 900.00. To settle up, Sam pays Alex 120.00; Jo pays Alex 113.33; Kim pays Alex 86.67.
How it works
Each expense is divided by days attended or equally, skipping anyone you leave out. A person's share is the sum of their parts of every expense; their net balance is what they paid minus that share. The payments are the fewest that clear every balance, found by an exact search (see the who owes whom calculator). Amounts are rounded to the cent so shares add back to each expense.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-08): arithmetic on the numbers you enter, with no external constants or published figures. Amounts are in whatever currency you enter. This is a calculation aid, not legal, tax or financial advice.
FAQ
How do I split costs when people stay different numbers of days?
Share long-stay costs such as the cabin by days attended and flat costs such as a group dinner equally. You choose the basis for each expense.
Can I leave someone out of one expense?
Yes. Pick them under Leave out for that expense, for example a non-drinker for the wine.
What if someone paid several things?
Enter each expense separately with the same payer. Their payments are added together before balances are worked out.
Why does a person with zero days pay nothing for the cabin?
The cabin is shared by days attended, so a person with no days has no weight. Put them on equal sharing if they should chip in.
How is this different from the road trip cost calculator?
The road trip calculator estimates the cost of a driving trip from fuel and prices. This tool splits costs you have already paid between people who took part to different degrees.
