Worked example

Six people, a $150 package each, a $120 private room and $90 of food shared, 13% tax, 18% tip, and a $40 massage upgrade that three people take. Everything before tax and tip is $1,230.00; with tax $159.90 and tip $221.40 the total is $1,611.30. Each person's base share is ($150 + $210 / 6) x 1.31 = $242.35, and each massage taker adds $52.40. If the group covers the guest of honour, the other five each pay $290.82 before add-ons.

How it works

Base share = package price + (room + food) / people. Add-ons are paid only by the people who take them. Every amount is multiplied by (1 + tax + tip), where tax and tip are percents of the price before tax. Total = (people x package + room + food + add-ons) x (1 + tax + tip).

To cover the guest of honour, their base share is divided among the other people on top of their own. The honoree is assumed to take no add-ons. If a package already includes a service charge, enter 0% tip so it is not counted twice.

No spa rate is assumed: every price, tax rate and tip percent is yours, so check them against the spa's quote.

How do I split a spa day fairly?

Does the guest of honour pay?

Only if you leave the box unticked. Tick it and the other guests share the honoree base cost.

Is the tip on the price before or after tax?

Here it is on the price before tax. Change the percent if you tip on the total or if a service charge is already included.

What if only some people want the package?

Run the tool with the group that takes the package, and use add-on rows for anything optional.

Is anything stored?
