Worked example

A receipt has milk 4.50, pasta 3.00, chicken 12.00, beer 15.00, chips 5.50 and cleaner 6.00, plus 1.95 tax, 46.00 of items and 47.95 in all. Milk, pasta and cleaner are shared by Alex, Sam and Jo; chicken by Alex and Sam; beer by Sam only; chips by Sam and Jo. Items come to 10.50 for Alex, 28.25 for Sam and 7.25 for Jo, and the 1.95 tax is shared in that proportion. Alex owes 10.94, Sam 29.45 and Jo 7.56.

How it works

Each item is split equally among the people ticked for it. The odd cent goes to the first person ticked. Tax and fees are then shared in proportion to each person's item subtotal. Totals add up to the receipt exactly. Enter the tax as the sum of every tax or fee line printed on the receipt. If prices on your receipt already include tax, enter 0 in the tax box.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-08): arithmetic on the numbers you enter, with no external constants or published figures. Amounts are in whatever currency you enter. This is a calculation aid, not legal, tax or financial advice.

FAQ

How do I split a grocery receipt between roommates?

Enter each item and tick the people who share it. Items everyone uses are ticked for all, and personal items are ticked only for the person who wants them. The tool totals what each person owes.

How is tax shared?

In proportion to each person item subtotal. Someone who bought more taxable items pays more of the tax.

What about items that are not taxed?

Enter the total of the tax actually charged. Because tax is shared by item subtotal, a small difference is possible if one person bought most of the untaxed items.

What if two people split an item that costs an odd number of cents?

The odd cent goes to the first person ticked, so the total always matches the receipt.

Can I see who owes whom if one person paid?

The person who paid owes nothing to themselves, so everyone else owes the paying person the amount shown. For several payers use the who owes whom calculator.
