Worked example

Seven days away with two pets. Boarding is $45 for the first pet and $30 for the second, $75 a night, so 7 × 75 = $525. A sitter at $25 a visit plus $5 for the second pet is $30 a visit; two visits a day is $60, so 7 × 60 = $420, plus a 10% tip of $42 = $462. The sitter is $63 cheaper.

How it works

Boarding = (first-pet nightly rate + extra-pet rate × extra pets) × nights + one-time fees. Sitter = (visit rate + extra-pet fee × extra pets) × visits per day × days + one-time fees, then the tip on the whole sitter bill. The break-even shows after how many days the cheaper option changes, when the one-time fees make the lines cross.

Rates differ between places and providers, so the tool has no price data: enter real quotes. Compare what is included (food, medication, walks, overnight stays) and any holiday surcharge before choosing. Pet sitters who stay overnight cost differently from drop-in visits: use the pet sitting rate calculator for that structure.

FAQ

Is a pet sitter cheaper than boarding?

It depends on the quotes, number of pets and visits per day. Enter both and the calculator shows which costs less for your trip.

How are extra pets priced?

Many kennels and sitters charge a lower rate for each additional pet. Enter those rates in the extra-pet fields.

What are one-time fees?

Charges that do not depend on the number of days, such as intake, transport or a meet-and-greet.

What does the break-even mean?

The number of days at which the two totals are equal. If it does not show, one option is cheaper for every length of trip.

Does this compare quality?

No. It compares price only. Check the care, vaccination requirements and your pet’s temperament.
